Preparing for a Russian Mountain Climb

If you've always wanted the ultimate in adventurous holiday ideas, then scaling one of Russia's many famous mountains may just be what you're looking for. Replete with incredible scenery and an amazing challenge for anyone with a mind to conquer the Russian landscape, it offers some of the biggest thrills you'll ever encounter outside skydiving, poker tournaments and bungee-jumping.

But some people do tend to go unprepared, and this can sometimes ruin what would otherwise be one of the most memorable holidays of their lives. This generally boils down to two things; arranging help for scaling the mountain, and purchasing the right equipment.

Everyone's seen action and adventure films where the hero is on the top of a craggy mountain in nothing but a t-shirt and jeans, but this doesn't really happen! People scale mountains wearing all sorts of thermal gear and good footwear, and although these items are sometimes expensive to rent or buy, they are worth it if you've got your health and safety head screwed on tight.

You'll also need to invest in a good guide - finding your way up a Russian mountain isn't something you can play by ear, and it's worthwhile having someone with you who knows which routes are riskier and which ones are the easiest way to scale the mountain whilst getting good views throughout the journey. They are invaluable sources of local knowledge, and well worth your money.

Finally, think carefully about how difficult it will be - it's worth noting that not everybody climbs mountains regularly, so work out and ensure that your stamina levels are up to scratch before you attempt something like this, and you'll find it's a lot easier than if you started with zero physical preparation. With all that said (and hopefully done, on your end!), you're ready, so get going and we hope you enjoy your journey to the peak!
